St. Joseph HospitalSt. Joseph Hospital School of Anesthesia for Nurses (SJHSAN) is a privately run program under the auspices of Associates In Anesthesia, Inc. the school was founded and received full accreditation from the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists in 1962.
Associates In Anesthesia felt that the need for the formal education of Nurse Anesthetists was essential for the delivery of quality anesthesia care. This need gave impetus to the founding of our school of nurse anesthesia. To date, we have enrolled over 360 students into our program. Although our school serves as a major supply of nurse anesthetists in Rhode Island, we have graduates throughout the country.
In 1990, SJHSAN felt a need to move to a more progressive academic setting, offering a program giving nurses an opportunity to become Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists and earn a Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia from the University of New England.
SJHSAN is fully accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA), 222 South Prospect Avenue, Suite 304, Park Ridge, IL 60068-4010. Telephone (847) 692-7050. SJHSAN received full accreditation in 2006 and maintains this status until the next review in 2016. The certification pass rate for SJHSAN first-time takers (2010) is 90%. The Pass rate for second-time takers (2010) is 100%. All graduates secure employment within six months of graduation and most secure employment before graduation. The SJHSAN attrition rate for the class of 2010 was 9%.
